Note: Protect your ironing surface before using starch or fusibles. For small projects, try adhering a piece of freezer paper to the ironing board before you start. When it’s soiled, remove and discard. For larger projects, cover the ironing surface with an old terry cloth beach towel. Remove it and put it through the laundry when it becomes soiled. After applying the starch mixture, it’s important to press, not slide, the iron, because fabric distorts easily while damp. Press the panel until it’s completely dry; this may take some time.
Trace the pattern shape with or without seam allowances onto the paper side of the freezer paper and cut out the shape. I prefer to use the template without seam allowances because it’s easy to accidentally trim away a little of the freezer-paper template each time I cut out a piece. Over time this may change the size and shape of the template. After making the template, adhere it to the right side of the string-pieced panel. The placement may be carefully planned or not. You may choose to let the pieces fall where they may!
Choose a wide range of values for your quilt, such as lights, mediums, and darks, as shown here. For colors, you may carefully control the range of color, choosing a traditional color scheme such as complementary, analogous, monochromatic, and so on. Or you can include every color of the rainbow. Whatever your color choice, a wide range of values is critical.
