Many journalism textbooks define news based on certain observable characteristics. The six that are commonly used are timeliness, singularity, prominence, proximity, impact and conflict. Using a fairly common experience, driving a car, we can see how these qualities may be present and help determine whether something would be considered news. • Timeliness refers to how recently something has happened. The idea is that news should be new and that something that has just happened, or is still happening—even if relatively minor—would be of interest to news audiences.

At the start of the reporting process, a reporter needs to be willing to believe things that most people would dismiss out of hand. Take the case of a school district that issues a press release saying that standardized test results prove that local children are learning their lessons well. Be willing to believe that—but also be willing to believe the opposite, that the test scores have been selectively presented to cover up serious deficiencies. That’s being skeptical. Being open is going even further, believing that it is at least possible that standardized tests may not reflect all of the kinds of learning that occur in a classroom and may not even be a good predictor of how well students will do in later schooling.
