One rug was particularly awe-inspiring, opening new doors to my thinking about what could be created through the medium of rug hooking: Fumiyo Hachisuka’s “Bamboo” (Celebration III). It remains one of the most strikingly gorgeous hooked rugs I have ever seen. Simple bamboo stalks belie the incredible artistry that went into the rug’s design and execution. The fine shading Fumiyo employed was brilliant. Her use of her grandmother’s old kimonos for hooking the design added a poignant note. I was not surprised to learn it was also one of the “Readers’ Choice” favorites.

As I reviewed the Celebration and the “Readers’ Choice” selections, I thought about the role this publication has played in my own thinking about hooked rugs. Celebration helped familiarize me with great rugs and their creators at a time when I was first learning about hooked rugs. I was living in St. Louis, Missouri, teaching myself the technical aspects of hooked rug construction, and trying to develop my own creative style. I ran across Celebrations III. I loved it so much that I subsequently sought out back copies of numbers I and II.
